LEGOLAND School Challenge 2026 Crowns Young LEGO Champions From Malaysia and the Philippines

From 451 Entries to Three Champions: Inside the LEGOLAND School Challenge 2026

Young builders from Malaysia and the Philippines take top honours at Asia’s largest interschool LEGO building competition, proving that imagination, engineering and teamwork make a formidable combination.

There is something rather remarkable about what children can create with a handful of LEGO bricks and an ambitious idea. Give them the freedom to design the ultimate theme park ride, and the results can be surprisingly sophisticated.

Tuan Haji Mohd Kamal Bin Hashim, Deputy Director, Sports, Co-Curricular Activities and Arts Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia.

That was precisely the premise of the LEGOLAND School Challenge 2026, which brought together some of Asia’s most inventive young minds for its fifth edition at LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort in Iskandar Puteri, Johor.

Organised in partnership with Malaysia’s Ministry of Education, the competition attracted 451 submissions from six countries, with just 15 teams earning a place in the Grand Finale.

After a showcase of imagination, technical ability and collaborative problem-solving, three teams emerged as champions, representing schools in Selangor, Kelantan and the Philippines.

Meet the Young Champions of LEGOLAND School Challenge 2026

Primary Champions – The Mavericks, SK Kubang Kerian 3, Kelantan, Malaysia.

This year’s competition produced a particularly strong showing from Malaysian schools, which claimed two of the three championship titles.

In the Junior Category, for children aged seven to nine, Puteri Mini Makers from SK Cyberjaya, Selangor, secured first place.

The Primary Category, for ages 10 to 12, was won by The Mavericks from SK Kubang Kerian 3 in Kelantan.

Meanwhile, the Secondary Category, for students aged 13 to 17, saw AJHS BluBLOC from Ateneo de Manila Junior High School in the Philippines take the top prize.

The results reflect the competition’s growing regional appeal, with participants from Malaysia, India, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong and China bringing their individual perspectives to the challenge.

The Ultimate Theme Park Ride: Where Imagination Meets Engineering

The theme for LEGOLAND School Challenge 2026 was The Ultimate Theme Park Ride, inviting students to dream up attractions that could capture the excitement of a theme park while demonstrating thoughtful design and technical understanding.

It is a deceptively demanding brief. Designing a compelling ride requires more than an eye-catching structure. Students must consider how their ideas fit together, solve practical building problems and work as a team to turn an imaginative concept into something tangible.

That is what makes the competition particularly relevant to today’s education landscape. Rooted in LEGO’s philosophy of learning through play, the challenge introduces students to STEAM education, encompassing science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, through an activity that feels more like creative exploration than conventional classroom learning. The process also encourages critical thinking, communication, resilience and the confidence to experiment, all skills that extend well beyond the competition itself.

Cs Lim, Vice President of LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort

As Cs Lim, Vice President of LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort, explained, the annual challenge continues to encourage students to approach creativity from new directions.

“We are pleased to see the LEGOLAND School Challenge continue to inspire young builders to push their creativity further each year,” he said. Lim also highlighted the importance of hands-on learning, noting that LEGO building allows children to explore STEM concepts, test ideas and develop confidence through experimentation and teamwork.

From Johor to Shanghai: Extraordinary Prizes Await the Winners

For the winning teams, the experience does not end with a trophy.

In partnership with global travel platform Trip.com, LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort is rewarding the champions with travel experiences designed to celebrate their achievements. The Primary and Secondary Category champions will receive trips to LEGOLAND Shanghai, offering the young builders an opportunity to discover another LEGO-themed destination.

The Junior Category champions will enjoy a trip to LEGOLAND Malaysia, with curated travel arrangements and experiences included. Every championship team will also receive a LEGOLAND Malaysia Annual Pass, an iconic LEGO trophy, LEGO sets for each team member and a Certificate of Achievement. Beyond the prizes, these experiences acknowledge the dedication, collaboration and ingenuity required to compete at a regional level.

One of the most appealing aspects of the competition is that the students’ work will continue to be celebrated after the Grand Finale.

The finalists’ creations will be displayed at MINILAND, LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort, until December 2026, allowing visitors to see the imaginative designs up close. For families planning a visit to Johor, the exhibition offers an additional reason to explore the resort, particularly for children who may be inspired to take part in a future edition.

It is also an opportunity to appreciate the remarkable detail and creativity that can emerge when young builders are given a meaningful challenge.

Why Learning Through Play Matters

The growing success of the LEGOLAND School Challenge speaks to a wider shift in how creativity and practical learning are valued.

While academic knowledge remains essential, the ability to apply that knowledge, work with others and develop original solutions is increasingly important.

A competition built around LEGO bricks offers an accessible introduction to these skills. Students learn to assess their designs, adapt when something does not work and collaborate towards a shared objective.

For educators and parents, it is a reminder that meaningful learning does not always need to resemble a traditional lesson.

The fifth edition of the competition has also demonstrated that young talent is not limited by geography. From schools in Selangor and Kelantan to classrooms in Manila, the next generation of creative thinkers is already finding ways to make its mark.

And sometimes, that journey begins with a single brick.
