Every Mid-Autumn Festival arrives with the same question: Which mooncakes are worth gifting this year?
For me, the answer has never been just about the flavour. It’s about the entire experience. The moment you lift the lid. The craftsmanship behind the box. The first bite that reminds you why these traditions have lasted for generations.

After previewing this year’s collections, one thing became clear. Luxury hotels are no longer simply selling mooncakes—they’re creating keepsakes. Some celebrate heritage through timeless recipes, while others push the boundaries with contemporary flavours and collectable packaging.
Whether you’re looking for the perfect corporate gift, a box to impress the family, or simply an excuse to indulge yourself, these are the three collections that deserve a place on your Mid-Autumn shopping list.
1. Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur
Best for Traditionalists Who Appreciate Modern Elegance
If your idea of the perfect mooncake leans towards timeless flavours presented beautifully, Shangri-La Kuala Lumpur delivers exactly that.

Inspired by blooming peonies and ancient Chinese coin motifs symbolising prosperity, harmony and abundance, this year’s collection feels quietly luxurious. Rather than relying on extravagant packaging, the keepsake boxes embrace understated elegance with soft floral detailing and refined finishes that wouldn’t look out of place displayed long after the festival.
The real highlight, however, is what’s inside.
During the tasting, I found myself gravitating towards the Yuzu Lotus Seed Paste with Bird’s Nest. The citrus adds just enough brightness to lighten the traditional lotus filling without overpowering it. It’s delicate, refreshing and one of the season’s most memorable flavours. For those who prefer classics, the Lotus Seed Paste with Double Yolk remains beautifully rich, while the Custard Lava is exactly as indulgent as you’d expect, with a molten centre that makes it difficult to stop at one slice.
One unexpected favourite was the Toffee Butterscotch. Inspired by pâtisserie flavours, it feels contemporary without losing the comforting richness you’d expect from a traditional baked mooncake.

The snowskin range is equally compelling. The earthy Matcha Strawberry strikes a lovely balance between bitterness and sweetness, while the Black Sesame and Nutella deliver a surprisingly addictive combination of roasted nuttiness and creamy chocolate.

Shang Palace Imperial Bloom Gift Set (RM358) Presented in an elegant blush drawer-style keepsake box, it feels sophisticated enough for both family gifting and corporate clients. The curated selection of flavours also offers an excellent balance between traditional and modern.
2. W Kuala Lumpur
Best for Design Lovers and Modern Entertainers

Making its debut this year, the Skyline Series transforms Kuala Lumpur’s skyline into four striking collector’s boxes inspired by different moments of the day—from the warm glow of sunrise to the deep colours of twilight. It’s easily one of the most contemporary mooncake collections I’ve seen this season. Each colourway feels almost like an art object, making it the sort of gift you’ll hesitate to unwrap.
Inside, YEN’s signature mooncakes continue to deliver.
The Mixed Nuts with YEN’s Golden Duck Meat remains wonderfully savoury, while the Maruchi Sea Salt Chocolate with Macadamia Nuts offers a richer, more dessert-like experience. Traditionalists will appreciate the Pure Lotus with Double Yolk, but for something entirely different, the exclusive X.O Ice Mooncakes are worth seeking out.

Inspired by Italian gelato, these frozen mooncakes are lighter, lower in sugar and wonderfully refreshing. I particularly enjoyed the Mango Goes Coco, which tasted almost like a tropical semifreddo rather than a conventional mooncake.
Then there’s the Crimson Glow Mixology Kit, arguably the most original gift set this year. Pairing mooncakes with cocktail mixers and premium gin transforms Mid-Autumn into something altogether more contemporary.

3. Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur
Best for Sophisticated Gifting
Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur approaches Mid-Autumn from a different perspective. Rather than focusing solely on tradition, this year’s collection celebrates Malaysia’s natural heritage.

Inspired by tropical rainforests, celadon ceramics and the iconic hornbill, the packaging immediately stands apart. Soft celadon green gives the boxes a calming elegance, while subtle illustrations create a beautiful connection between Malaysian identity and Chinese tradition.
The flavours continue that sense of creativity. One of the biggest surprises was the new Hazelnut & Fig Chocolate, inspired by the hornbill’s favourite fruit. Rich chocolate meets roasted hazelnut with gentle sweetness from the fig, creating something that feels closer to fine confectionery than a conventional mooncake.

The Pistachio Kataifi Chocolate is another standout, capturing the crisp texture that’s become increasingly popular in luxury desserts, while the Mango Passion Rice Crispy Chocolate adds brightness and crunch.
Traditionalists aren’t forgotten either.
The Lotus Paste with Single Yolk and Pandan Paste with Single Yolk are beautifully balanced, while the Musang King Durian snowskin remains an indulgent favourite for durian lovers.

Perhaps the most beautiful release, however, is the Limited-Edition Tiffin Gift Set.
Hand-painted by Malaysian social enterprise Tiffin Jeiwa, each steel tiffin celebrates local craftsmanship while supporting underserved women through artisan workshops. It’s a thoughtful collaboration that transforms the mooncake box into a meaningful keepsake long after Mid-Autumn has passed.
