How Starbucks Malaysia Is Brewing Change Through Creativity

Starbucks Malaysia’s Bearista Art Project celebrates creativity, inclusivity and social impact. Supporting local artists and Palestine relief efforts with RM500,000 in contributions.

Where Art, Community, and Coffee Connect

Starbucks Malaysia recently wrapped up its year-long Bearista Art Project. A grand finale at Pavilion Bukit Jalil celebrating creativity, inclusivity and philanthropy. Launched in December 2023 to mark Starbucks Malaysia’s 25th anniversary, the initiative brought together over 60 local artists—including Deaf, autistic and emerging talents—to transform 25 life-sized Bearista figures into captivating works of art. Each piece told a unique story, showcasing that art transcends barriers and speaks to the heart.

Art That Gives Back

The project evolved into a nationwide collection of collectable Mini-Bearistas inspired by the life-sized creations available at Starbucks outlets across Malaysia. With every purchase, customers supported both local artists and a greater cause: in partnership with MERCY Malaysia, Starbucks donated part of the proceeds to the Palestine Relief Fund, aiding health, sanitation and livelihood programs for communities in need.

A Grand Finale to Remember

The event’s highlight was the surprise announcement of Starbucks Malaysia’s RM500,000 pledge—RM250,000 to support participating artists and RM250,000 to MERCY Malaysia’s Palestine Relief Fund. The celebration also marked a historic moment as the project was awarded the Malaysia Book of Records title for “Most Bearista Art in a Community Project,” reflecting Starbucks’ dedication to supporting both local talent and global causes.

More Than an Art Show

The finale showcased all 25 Bearistas, engaging guests with art exhibitions, games, and exclusive merchandise. A special performance by DeafBeat Malaysia, a percussion group of Deaf musicians, proved that rhythm needs no sound, while a coffee-tasting session led by Lin, a Deaf senior barista from the world’s first Starbucks Signing Store, highlighted the brand’s commitment to inclusivity.

Get Together for a Better World

Building on the momentum of the Bearista Art Project, Starbucks Malaysia introduced its Get Together campaign, rolling out across Asia Pacific. This initiative encourages customers to foster positive change through conversations centered on people, community, and the environment—because sometimes, all it takes is two cups of coffee to spark meaningful connections.
