Garmin Malaysia and Reef Check Malaysia partnered to address ghost nets, setting a new standard for sustainable marine conservation. Between March and September 2024, they removed 755 kilograms of ghost nets, far surpassing the 100-kilogram target. This effort cleaned the ocean, empowered communities, repurposed waste and raised vital conservation awareness.

A Commitment to a Cleaner Ocean

The initiative focused on five picturesque islands in Mersing, Johor: Pulau Besar, Pulau Aur, Pulau Pemanggil, Pulau Sibu and Pulau Tinggi. Each of these islands became the backdrop for a mission that united locals, environmentalists, and corporate innovation. With a pledge of RM100 for every kilogram of ghost nets removed, Garmin Malaysia not only hit but exceeded its fundraising goal of RM10,000.

Garmin Malaysia: Empowering Islanders to Protect Their Home

Marine conservation is not just about removing waste—it’s about creating a legacy. As part of the project, 10 islanders were trained in marine conservation techniques, giving them the skills to protect their ecosystem. By increasing local participation, the initiative amplified its impact, turning these individuals into custodians of their environment.

Julian Hyde, CEO of Reef Check Malaysia, emphasized the importance of local involvement: “We didn’t just clean the oceans; we empowered communities. With additional volunteers, our small team could address broader challenges, from ghost nets to reef health.”

From Waste to Wonder: Upcycling Ghost Nets

In collaboration with The Sea Monkey Project, Garmin Malaysia gave the collected ghost nets a second life. These nets were transformed into chic, functional clutches—a perfect match for Garmin’s Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition, a dive-focused wearable made from recycled ocean-bound plastic. This marriage of innovation and sustainability showcases Garmin’s vision of turning environmental threats into opportunities for responsible consumption.

The Road Ahead: Optimism for the Future

Sheena Sim, Marketing Lead at Garmin Malaysia, summed it up perfectly: “We’re not just protecting oceans; we’re inspiring a movement. Together, we’re building a sustainable future for generations to come.”

Why It Matters

Marine conservation is no longer optional; it’s essential. Garmin and Reef Check Malaysia demonstrate what’s possible when corporate responsibility combines with community-driven action in their initiative. Their efforts don’t just protect marine life—they set the stage for a more sustainable future.
