Curious about what’s in store? Let’s dive into the twists, turns, and high-stakes drama that await in this next chapter of the global sensation.
New Game, Same Menace
The new trailer gives us a glimpse of what’s to come in the next season of Squid Game. After Gi-hun’s victory in Season 1, his focus shifts to ending the deadly competition. The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) still shrouds his true intentions in mystery. In a bold move, Gi-hun, also known as “Player 456,” chooses to re-enter the game. However, as viewers know, the challenges are now even deadlier and more sinister.
The New Cast Revealed
With Season 2 premiering this December 26, we’ll see some familiar faces returning to the players’ roster. In addition to the returning characters, the cast will feature Yim Si-wan (Unlocked), Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon (The Glory), Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an. You can catch a glimpse of these newcomers in the trailer. This new lineup will reveal whether they’re allies to Gi-hun—or opponents set to challenge him.
Why Gi-Hun Makes His Return?
From the teaser trailer, we can see Gi-Hun makes a comeback to this deadly game. But why? According to the director, Hwang Dong-hyuk during Netflix’s Fall Edit event in November, “He wants to return to a ‘normal’ so-called life. [But] there’s something inside him that has already been broken where he cannot return to the way he was before”.
Moreover, Gi-hun’s actor, Lee Jung-Jae, reminds us that the character Gi-hun will not be the same person he was in Season 1. “I had many opportunities where I was able to express that goodness of heart in the character [in Season 1]. However, in Season 2, while certain circumstances allow for that [quality] to peek out of him… I didn’t have that many opportunities.”
A Quick Recap on Season 1 [Spoiler Alert!]
For the first-timers, here’s the gist of what happened in Season 1 of Squid Game. Gi-Hun is the only survivor during the first game. Meanwhile, the detective Hwang Jun-ho discovered that his brother was the Front Man, and Jun-ho was shot by his brother near the end of Season 1. Ironically, Gi-hun found out that ‘Player 001’ (played by O Yeong-su) is the mastermind behind the game, and he revealed his motives near his deathbed. From there, Gi-hun had determined to stop this cruel game once and for all.
So, for Squid Game fans out there, you have to tune in this holiday season to see how this new version of Gi-hun tackles a contest as treacherous as Squid Game, only on Netflix.
