Red Hong Yi’s inspiration for the design stemmed from her architectural work in Shanghai, where she frequently encountered leftover materials. This exposure ignited her passion for recycling and repurposing materials, a theme she continues to explore in her art. A recent trip to Bali, where she observed innovative uses of upcycled materials, further influenced her design approach for the Totem Shelf.
“My interest in recyclable materials began during my architectural work in Shanghai, where I observed many leftover materials and decided to use them in my works. This fascination with recycling materials continued as I explored their potential in my art years later,” she explained.
