Health Leaders Unite to Tackle Influenza in Malaysia
In a bold step to reduce the impact of influenza across Malaysia, global healthcare firm Abbott and leading pharmacy network Big Caring Group have launched a nationwide Influenza Awareness Program, aimed at arming the public with knowledge and preventive strategies. Spanning three years, from 2025 to 2027, the campaign promises a sustained, multi-channel effort to promote early intervention, vaccination, and hygiene practices.
The initiative arrives at a critical time. In 2024 alone, Malaysia recorded over 30,000 flu cases and 17 related deaths—figures many health experts consider under-reported, given the flu’s symptom overlap with the common cold.
What the Program Will Offer
National roll-out includes schools, workplaces, travel hubs, and rural communities
From inner-city Kuala Lumpur to remote rural districts, the program’s reach will be expansive. Malaysians can expect:
- Health Day influenza sessions: Held on-site and online to increase understanding of flu risks and symptoms.
- Corporate wellness outreach: Bringing flu education to workplaces through health talks and on-site screenings.
- Travel fair activations: Advising holiday-goers on flu prevention before they fly.
- School and university programs: Targeting young people with age-appropriate, interactive content.
The campaign is designed not just to inform but also to build resilient health behaviours, especially among high-risk groups like seniors, young children, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses.
Why Influenza Still Matters
More than a cold: Understanding the real risk
Many Malaysians underestimate the flu, often mistaking it for a passing bug. But health professionals warn: influenza is not benign. Left untreated, it can lead to complications such as pneumonia, hospitalisation, or worsening of pre-existing conditions.
“Influenza is more than just a seasonal illness—it can disrupt lives, families, and communities,” said Mr. Kwa Kheng Hoe, General Manager of Abbott’s medicines business in Malaysia. “This program is about giving people the tools to protect themselves.”
The initiative is strongly aligned with World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendations that urge annual flu vaccinations, particularly for the vulnerable.
Government Backing and Expanded Access
Free flu shots are now available for seniors with comorbidities
In tandem with this private sector initiative, Malaysia’s Ministry of Health has expanded its national vaccination program. Seniors aged 60+ with comorbidities can now receive free influenza vaccines at selected public health facilities.
This multi-pronged approach—policy support, public education, and improved access—could be a game changer in reducing national flu burdens.
“It’s about reaching people where they are,” said Mr. Loo Jooi Leng, Head of Sustainability at BIG CARiNG Group. “We want to help people stay healthy before they get sick.”
Protect Yourself and Your Family
5 flu prevention tips from health professionals
Health experts recommend these simple yet vital actions to reduce the risk of flu:
- Get vaccinated annually – Immunity drops over time, and strains mutate.
- Practice good hygiene – Wash hands or use sanitiser frequently.
- Cover coughs and sneezes – Use tissues or your elbow.
- Improve indoor air quality – Open windows or use air purifiers.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle – Sleep well, eat right, and manage stress.
